Anne Reader, the amazing librarian at Ann Arbor STEAM, created this excellent guide on how to appropriately attend class meetings while learning from home and become a respectable online superstar! This is a great lesson in online etiquette for people of all ages. The video below is only about three minutes, and there is an accompanying PDF slide deck that you can use, as well (see attached file at the bottom of this post).

The University of Michigan Natural History Museum, as they adapt to social distancing and closures, has launched their museum in a virtual format online, called "Museum @ Home," complete with activities, videos, and virtual field trips. See the virtual museum here: https://lsa.umich.edu/ummnh/visitors/museumathome.html More info can be found here: https://mailchi.mp/umich.edu/ummnh-museum-update-may2020?e=a130aff1c2 What is screencasting? Simply put, it is a way to either record or live broadcast what you are doing on your computer so that you can show or demonstrate something to someone else. Typically, teachers use it to record brief demonstration videos for their students showing them how to do something on the computer, while the teacher is simultaneously narrating the steps and methods. It is one of the quickest and most powerful ways to show someone how to do something on a computer, and can be one on the fly. Two of the most popular (and FREE) screencasting tools are Screencastify and Loom. Both are great, so whichever one you choose, you can't lose! Screencastify does seamlessly interface with your Google Apps (it is an extension for your Google browser and Gsuite account). But, Loom gives teachers a "pro" level account with no time limit. More info on that can be found here: https://support.loom.com/hc/en-us/articles/360006579637-Loom-Pro-Free-for-Students-and-Teachers At the bottom of this page, check out a great video comparing the two different tools (spoiler alert: the experts determined that the comparison came out to pretty much a tie). from Follett School Solutions: Our publisher partners have responded to the COVID-19 school closings by providing learning resources that will help you plan and execute your lessons from home. Thanks, Kyle Kipp The TeacherCast blog offers a ton of great discussions on current topics in education. This episode tackles the issue of engaging students in STEM education during these distance learning days. Listen to the podcast, see the links to resources here: https://www.teachercast.net/captivate-podcast/learning-how-to-engage-stem-education-students-during-distance-learning-days/?ck_subscriber_id=172599966 From Common Sense Media: Visit museums, parks, historical sites, and more to enhance at-home learning. See top picks here! TOP PICKS | 31 TOOLSVirtual Field Trip Apps and WebsitesField trips are informal learning experiences that get students out into the world, exploring the world and students' interests. Trips to museums, parks, historical sites, and more show students that learning (and life) happens outside the classroom, too. During field trips, students discover new things and learn in authentic environments, placing classroom content into new contexts. Unfortunately, for many schools and students, field trips are rare (if they happen at all). Thankfully, there are great games, apps, and websites that can bring places and experiences fostered by field trips to the classroom. While not an outright replacement, these field trip tools can offer inspiring and intriguing experiences for students. AAPS Learning on Demand: "Ask an Expert" and "How to Guides". In collaboration with the tech department, all librarians are contributing to professional development through the "Ask an Expert" sessions as well as "How to Guides". If you need help on a specific topic please let me know and I can create a guide or a session as others probably have the same question. Also if you have already created screencasts as Wiens and Hochella have done, I may adapt those as well with your permission. 2. Tappan Library Website Blog and Resource Page I update this page daily for teachers to use as a go-to resource for teachers, with a focus on our remote learning objectives. Please take a look and let me know if there is anything I could add that would be helpful and I will gladly update. 3. Teacher Learning Networks: I have joined all the curriculum TLNs and some department Zoom meetings to stay current on ways I can help. However, if you want to reach out to me please feel free at any time via email or this form. 4. Tappan Library Research Resources page: If you are looking for high quality resources to direct your students to, we've got them on the Tappan Library webpage. I have already trained students to head to this page when they are looking for reliable places to find their information for school projects. High quality online encyclopedias, databases, ebooks, articles, and more can all be found here. If you need help learning how to use these, or integrate them into your lessons, just ask me. Most of these come with built in and ready to use teacher resources, curriculum, and activities that you can easily incorporate into your lessons. 5. Looking for free online access to books and literature? Just go here: https://mediacentertappan.weebly.com/tappan-library-blog/where-can-students-go-to-access-free-books-and-literature-online-since-libraries-and-bookstores-are-closed I am here to facilitate, please don't hesitate to reach out.
