Today I want to talk to you guys about Kahoot. Kahoot is a really cool program that lets teachers create a quiz or survey and allows students to respond using their phones, tablets or laptops in real time. You display the teacher screen on the projector and the results are posted after each question. It is a great way to keep all of your students engaged as you conduct formative assessments.
The first thing that you need to do is create an account. Go to https://getkahoot.com and follow the steps. You will need to give them your email address.
Once you are logged in, you have the option to create a quiz, a discussion or a survey.
You are able to choose the number of questions, the number of possible answers per question, the number of points each question is worth and the amount of time students have to answer (5-120 seconds). You are also able to add an image or video to a question.
Once you save and finish your quiz, you can choose to launch it. Kahoot will generate a pin number that you give to students. Students do not need an email address to use Kahoot. They simply go to kahoot.it and enter the game pin. Then they enter a “nickname” that identifies them (could also be a team name).
And thats it! You just project the teacher screen and launch the quiz. The question is projected on the screen and students use their devices to choose an answer. The device shows the student if they answered correctly or incorrectly, while the teacher screen shows a bar graph of how many students chose each answer. At the end, each player (or team) is assigned a score and the winner is revealed!
I feel that Kahoot could have many applications in the classroom. You could do a quick informal survey, “do you understand _____?” and every student is able to respond, taking away the fear our shy students feel about raising their hand. It would also be a great way to review before a test. You could set the quiz up and allow students to work individually or in small teams. The student gets instant feedback if they answered correctly or incorrectly. You could then allow students who got the right answer explain it to the class. It is a fun way to get all the students in your class engaged in learning!
